St Mark’s oral rehydration solution

Goodness provided

You can make up the St Mark's oral rehydration solution if you have been experiencing ongoing diarrhoea and or vomiting. This recipe is used by WHO as a rehydration solution and has been adopted by the sports drink manufacturers. It is important to ensure you follow the recipe as the right balance of salt and sugar helps increase the rate of water uptake by the body. To improve palatability you can chill it in the refrigerator, partially freeze it and drink it as a slushy, add a dash of lemon cordial (needs to be less than 100mls so as to not affect the sugar salt ratio) or squeeze in some lemon juice and use a straw to enable you to sip on it slowly.

Ingredients

1 level tsp salt (3.5g)
6 level tsps glucose powder
1/2 tsp sodium bicarb
1L water

Method

  1. Stir to mix the ingredients together in a large jug.
  2. Store in the refrigerator or drink at room temperature

See the suggestions above to improve the palatability.
